Meeting to protest the Fugitive Slave Law is held.
October 14, 1850
Some 4,000 residents – black and white – gather at Faneuil Hall to protest passage of the law and plan resistance to it. At the meeting, Charles Sumner declares, “The Stamp Act could not be executed here. Can the Fugitive Slave Bill?” Speakers include Frederick Douglass and Rev. Theodore Parker, who proposes formation of a Committee of vigilance & Safety that is created immediately after the meeting.
